The Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership Fall 2009 Symposium Gathering
The Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership Fall 2009 Fall Symposium Gathering for alumni, students, faculty and friends was held November 20, 2009 in Edwin Duncan Hall. The Symposium focussed on issues of International Education and Connections with the Global Community. We were so pleased to have a distinguished panel of speakers including the following:
Dr. Jim Killacky, Program Director gave opening remarks and welcomed the students, alumni, faculty and friends into the conversation concerning International Education.
Dr. Jesse Lutabingwa, Associate Vice Chancellor for International Education briefly addressed International Education at ASU and abroad in which he laid out some major issues, worldwide, that should be noted and of concern in the realm of international education (IE).
Arshad Bashir, Doctoral student from Cohort 17 and the first Fulbright Scholar in the Educational Doctoral program discussed International relationships and Peace Education. Mr. Bashir focused on the need to incorporate peace studies in all curriculums for both countries at peace and countries at war.
Christy Forrest, Doctoral Student from Cohort 16 and Associate Dean at Davidson Community College discussed the importance of incorporating International Education into the Community College curriculum. She made the compelling point that 44% of all undergraduates go to community colleges, and of those many don't go any futher; therefore, if IE is important (and it is), then the classroom in a community college maybe their only source of exposure to IE.
Marian Johnson, Doctoral student from Cohort 15 and Doctoral Research Assistant discussed the efforts made to include International components into the curriculum at ASU.
Dr. Rob Sanders discussed ASU connections with Latin American Education in addition to his personal international education experiences in Australia, France, Mexico and Bolivua.
Dr. Kelly Clarke-Keefe, Educational Leadership doctoral program faculty engaged symposium members in connected conversations related to the topics discussed by the panel.
Dr. Vachel Miller, Educational Leadership doctoral program faculty closed the symposium with a discussion of the connections that ASU already has with the global community. He emphasized our growing role in the International community.
Members of the symposium were invited to attend the International Coffee House light lunch event in the Union afterwards and that was also very successful. The ASU Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership 2010 Spring Symposium in Hickory, NC will focus on issues in Social Justice and Doctoral Studies. We hope to see you there!
Doctoral Website Construction
We are pleased to announce the unveiling of our new doctoral website. Emily Miller and Dr. Jim Killacky have created a new and exciting online format for students, faculty and alumni to engage with the Educational Leadership Doctoral Program. We invite you to explore this new venue as we continue to work to improve it.
