Course Description This intensive institute provides practicing therapists, counselors, graduate students, and artists opportunities to explore the integration of dreamwork, ecotherapy and expressive arts by examining the ever-present cycles in our lives: Day and night, the seasons, and the cycles of birth, life, death and regeneration. In the Appalachian approach to expressive arts therapy, nature is the inspiration for creative expression and wisdom for daily life and personal growth. Dreamwork is a valuable method in expressive arts therapy, illustrating the relationship between the outer landscape of the earth and the inner landscape of the personal psyche. II. Course Objectives To explore the nature of creativity and creative process in the natural world and the relationship between creativity and personal growth and healing. To gain an overview of the fields of expressive arts therapy and ecotherapy. To explore with peers, faculty, and other professionals the principles and application of a variety of methods of dreamwork, ecotherapy and expressive arts therapy. To explore the rationale for and practice of dreamwork in expressive arts therapy. To experience the therapeutic effects of the integration of expressive arts modalities such as movement, visual arts, music, writing, enactment, and ritual within the contexts of dreamwork and ecotherapy. III. Outline of Course Topics Introduction to Intermodal Expressive Arts Therapy Premises of Expressive Arts Therapy Integration of Ecotherapy and Dreamwork with Expressive Arts Therapy Theory and Practice of Expressive Arts Therapy, Ecotherapy and Dreamwork Role of the Artist/Teacher/Therapist Nature as the Model for Creative Process Dreamwork in Expressive Arts Therapy Healing in Nature Please note: All topics in this course are taught from a multicultural perspective which emphasizes the differing experiences, cultures, histories, and perspectives of people from a variety of ethnic, gender, racial, and social class backgrounds. IV. Course Format/Method of Teaching The daily format of the class may vary depending upon specific goals of the individual class members as well as upon the nature of the topics studied. Individual thinking and creativity as well as community building are encouraged. There is a strong emphasis on experiential learning. Personal reflection and sharing are also important components of the course. Because of the emphasis on body awareness and movement, students are encouraged to dress in loose, comfortable clothing. V. Course Requirements 1. Attendance and participation: Since the course utilizes a seminar format and has a major experiential component, class attendance and meaningful participation are mandatory. Students are expected to attend all sessions and peer group meetings. 2. Reading preparation: Students are required to read the texts and supplementary materials. 3. Peer group meetings: Students are required to participate actively in and to reflect upon daily peer group sessions. 4. Final reflection and art work: All parts required. Journal Synopsis Keep a journal of your experiences for each day of the institute. Based on your journal, write a brief summary of each day, noting ideas, experiential activities and personal peer group work that were particularly meaningful. Write and submit a 4-6 page summary of your work. Book Review Read one book of your choice from the reading list and write a 2-3 page critique and book review. Artistic Reflection Express your most important learning from this course in artistic form (such as poetry, visual art, clay, etc.) This can be submitted as a photograph if appropriate. Please note: These products will not be returned, so keep a personal copy for yourself. Final products are due by May 29. (TBA June 4 and 5) VI. Evaluation/Grading: Grading in this institute is based on an S or U for satisfactory or unsatisfactory performance. In order to receive a grade of S all course requirements must be completed. VII. Attendance Policy: Graduate students are expected to be responsible for regular class attendance.
