UNDER THE TRACKS

Oil on Canvas

Coming to grips with being a woman has taken me a long time. I have felt my voice smothered by men and my body glorified in the reflections of their eyes. I have felt my body's limitations when I've competed against men. I have felt my body work against me as a target for violence. I have felt my body make me an object not a person.

This painting is apart of a series of paintings that I have worked on throughout my twenties. They all revolve around my struggle to understand my female identity. Several of the paintings from this series hang around my room. They serve as a source of meditation and self-reflection. They are my visual voice.
