The faculty of Expressive Arts Therapy at Appalachian State University is interdisciplinary and includes professors from the Departments of Human Development and Psychological Counseling, Psychology, Theatre and Dance, English, Art, Anthropology,and Leadership and Educational Studies, and the School of Music. The program also hosts national and international visiting faculty.

Marianne Adams Marianne Adams holds an M.F.A. in Dance and an M.A. in Clinical Psychology. She is currently integrating these two fields through her work as a Professor of Theatre and Dance at Appalachian. She has received numerous grants in support of her work, including a 2003 international performance grant. She is a certified Pilates Instructor and has also worked as a therapeutic movement specialist in several mental health settings. She is a founding member of the Appalachian Expressive Arts Collective.
Sally Atkins Sally Atkins holds an Ed.D. in Counselor Education. A Licensed Psychologist and Registered Expressive Arts Therapist, she is Professor of Human Development and Psychological Counseling at Appalachian and Core Faculty of the European Graduate School in Switzerland. She has been a practicing psychotherapist for 30 years and is a member of the American Academy of Psychotherapists. Her teaching and research interests include therapy and the arts, cross-cultural healing practices, ecotherapy, and dreamwork. Sally is the founder of the Appalachian Expressive Arts Collective, and received the Creativity and Innnovation Award for Appalachian's Expressive Arts Therapy Program from the North Carolina Counseling Association. She is a storyteller, ritualist, and poet.
Kathleen Brinko Kathleen T. Brinko holds a B. Art, an M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education, a Ph.D. in Adult and Higher Education and a Certificate in Expressive Arts Therapy. She has consulted with faculty about their teaching for over 20 years and is currently Director of Faculty and Academic Development in the Hubbard Center for Faculty and Staff Support.  One of Kate's special interests is using expressive arts with children and adults with developmental disabilities. Kate is primarily a visual artist and enjoys the destruction/reconstruction process in collage, assemblage, mosaics and crazy quilts. However, she has been seen banging on a drum and dancing with abandon.
Karen Caldwell Karen Caldwell holds a Ph.D. in Family and Child Development and a B.A. in Music. She is currently Assistant Professor of Human Development and Psychological Counseling where she coordinates the marriage and family therapy clinic. Her research interests include the relationship between complementary and alternative medicine and women's issues. Karen is a Tai Chi instructor and provides weekly classes in Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Stress Management as a service to the community.     
Kelly Clark-Keefe Kelly Clark-Keefe holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and an M.A. in Counseling Psychology. Her B.A. in Psychology includes a minor in Fine Art. Her interests lie in arts-based approaches to qualitative research in educational and social service settings. Combining her affinity and experience in expressive arts with her skills as a qualitative methodologist, she is currently conducting a study exploring the perceptions youth hold about the ways in which artistic modes of learning interrelate with their educational identities and aspirations. Kelly is Assistant Professor of Leadership and Educational Studies. She is an interdisciplinarian at heart.
Cathy McKinney Cathy McKinney holds a Ph.D. in Music Therapy and Behavioral Medicine. A Board Certified Music Therapist with 20 years clinical experience in a variety of settings, she is currently Associate Professor of Music Therapy and Director of the Music Therapy Program at Appalachian. A Fellow of the Association of Music and Imagery, her current clinical interests are the use of music improvisation and the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music as vehicles for personal awareness, growth and transformation. She is a founding member of the Appalachian Expressive Arts Collective.
Harold McKinney Harold McKinney holds a D.A. in Music, and an advanced certification from the Creative Motion Alliance. He teaches annually at the Windswept Music Workshop in Kansas City, Missouri, including a series of sessions on Creative Motion and Expressive Arts. He has led dream workshops across the Southeast. He is Professor of Music at Appalachian where he teaches trombone and an experiential graduate course on Philosophy of Music. He is a founding member of the Appalachian Expressive Arts Collective.
Jack Mulgrew

Jack Mulgrew, ABPP, holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and is currently Professor of Human Development and Psychological Counseling at Appalachian. His areas of interest and expertise are Systemic Gestalt Therapy, the personhood of the therapist and the quality of life within a therapy session. He is interested in focusing on sickness as something that is developed between people rather than something that exists within someone.

 

Liz Rose Liz Rose holds a Ph.D. in Music Education and is a Board Certified Music Therapist. She is Associate Professor of Music Education and Music Therapy at Appalachian. Liz is certified in Dalcroze Eurhythmics, a methodology that emphasizes coming to know music through expressive movement, and she has presented clinics nationally. Her professional interests include creativity and the arts, as well as expressive musicianship through Dalcroze Eurhythmics.
Marianne Suggs

Marianne Suggs holds a Ph.D. in Art and Art Education. She is a mixed media artist who has exhibited nationally and regionally in juried and invitational exhibitions. Her work is often about social issues affecting women. Recently,she collaborated with Sally Atkins to publish Breath is the First Prayer, a book of poetry and artwork. She is currently Professor of Art at Appalachian.

 

Jay Wentworth Jay Wentworth holds a Ph.D. in Dramatic Literature and degrees in philosophy, theology and culture, and English, as well as a postgraduate certificate from the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland. Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Appalachian, he is on the Board of Directors of the Association for Integrative Studies. He is a published poet who has also written two opera librettos and has collaborated with the Broyhill Chamber Ensemble on several performances as a writer and performer. The Atlanta Ballet Company has accepted his children's story "The Tree of Fallen Stars" as the basis for a ballet.
Joan Woodworth Joan Woodworth holds a Ph.D. in Psychology with a concentration in the history of science. Currently Professor of Psychology at Appalachian, she teaches courses in history and systems and integrative paradigms in psychology, as well as a graduate counseling seminar in clinical methods of dreamwork. Her professional interests include the cross-cultural study of dreams, consciousness studies and ecopsychology.
Keith Davis

Keith Davis holds a Ph.D. in Counseling and Counselor Education and is a National Certified Counselor and North Carolina Licensed School Counselor. He has worked as an elementary and high school counselor as well as working in private practice with children, adolescents and their families. He is Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Development and Psychological Counseling at Appalachian. His teaching and research interests include therapy and the arts, counseling children/adolescents, counseling men, school counseling and marriage and family therapy.

More than 20 faculty members from across the University serve as guest lecturers and curriculum consultants for Expressive Arts Therapy.
