Emergency Evacuation Guidelines for Duncan Hall

Once an alarm is activated, faculty/staff/students in classrooms/labs/offices and restrooms should leave rooms promptly and proceed to the nearest exit and evacuate the building*. Instructors should check, if at all possible, to make certain their classrooms/labs have been evacuated before leaving themselves.

  • Those exiting the building on the Rivers Street side should move toward Rankin science building and stay out of the parking area in front of Duncan because emergency vehicles and personnel may need immediate access to that area.
  • Those exiting the building on the Octagon side on the lower level should move to the green space between Duncan and Rankin and not remain under the Octagon.
  • Those exiting from the Octagon level itself, please move away from the building, again toward Rankin.

All occupants should remain at the very minimum, 50 feet from the building. Occupants should remain at their gathering point until Safety Office personnel or other designated individuals indicate that the drill has been completed.

In inclement weather, seek shelter either in Rankin itself or in the Breezeway area of Rankin opposite Duncan Hall.

*Special Note: Faculty should notify students in each class of the need to identify themselves (privately if appropriate) if they will need assistance during a building evacuation. Employees are responsible for identifying themselves to their supervisor (privately if appropriate) if they will need assistance during a building evacuation. Department chairpersons, and/or area supervisors should assist any student or employee who may be mobility impaired in preplanning their evacuation for an emergency situation. This may include enlisting the aid of other faculty/staff or students to provide assistance in evacuating mobility impaired persons from the building.
