Core Curriculum or Special Designator Course proposal must include a syllabus (more than one if multiple instructors). Is this a Core Curriculum course? yes no ___ Is this a Special Designator Course? yes no __ W____ S____ MC____ ND____ C ____ CD ____ Rationale: The issue: When the basic criterion for admission to the Ed.S. Program was developed, the idea was to set a high standard for admissions by setting a minimum score of 450 in GRE Verbal and 450 in GRE Quantitative or 50% on MAT. These tests are designed as indicators of potential success in a graduate program. Currently, a score of 430 on the GRE Verbal indicates 40th percentile, while a score of 560 on the GRE Quantitative represents the 40th percentile. To set equal scores for each section ignores these percentiles. More importantly, if we use the tests as designed, the scores will provide insight into whether or not a candidate will successfully complete a graduate program, but all candidates for admission into the Ed.S. School Administration Program have already successfully completed a graduate program, which seems to be much more relevant than these scores. There is also the requirement of 3.5 GPA in last earned degree program (usually a Masters at this level), which exceeds the minimum requirement for completion of a graduate program. The common practice among graduate schools is to have an objective formula to serve the purpose of setting criteria for minimum regular admission to the Graduate School, with additional requirements expected for program admission. Our current formula denies admission to the Graduate School blocking consideration by the Program using more valid measures of potential success as graduate of our program. These additional considerations include three letters of references from professional sources such as the current or most recent administrator/supervisor and a writing sample addressing leadership philosophy and professional goals. Recently, due to these high standards and the restrictions by the Graduate School placed on accepting students provisionally, we have lost two cohorts of students who could not meet the test requirements (often missing by as little as 10 20 points on one section of the GRE) or who have decided to enter doctoral programs instead of our Ed.S. With the addition of the Hickory Ed.D. cohorts, it is essential that we recruit and admit students into the our Ed.S. program who have proven successful completion of graduate programs and demonstrated their leadership skills rather than their test-taking skills. CURRENT BULLETIN DESCRIPTIONS In the bulletin in the section on admission to the Graduate School: Persons who apply for admission to the Graduate School, if accepted, may be admitted in one of several categories as described below. If a student does not complete degree requirements within seven years of being admitted, the admission expires. REGULAR. Regular admission to the Graduate School is granted to students who meet the requirements for entrance established by a specific program. Conditions, such as the completion of one or more additional undergraduate or graduate courses, may be specified. PROVISIONAL. Provisional admission to a graduate program may be granted in the following circumstances with a recommendation from the program director and the departmental chair of the admitting program: 1) a student whose application materials do not meet the basic criteria for a program, but who has compensating work experience or outstanding alternative credentials; 2) a student whose undergraduate degree is in another discipline but who shows evidence of potential success in the desired program. Students admitted provisionally may be required to take additional prerequisite courses during their first year, and may have to achieve a specific graduate GPA as determined by the admitting program. Provisionally admitted students cannot hold assistantships, scholarships, or tuition scholarships during the first semester. TENTATIVE. Students may be admitted either regularly or provisionally under a tentative status. Tentative status is given to any student who must complete a specified requirement prior to registration and enrollment, such as completion of the undergraduate degree. In the program description for admission into the Ed.S. School Administration Program: Admission Requirements: Master's degree in an educational field from an accredited college or university; current principal licensure (NC licensure code 12 or its equivalent from another state); three years of teaching experience*; complete application to the graduate school, including resume, three letters of recommendation**, official GRE general or MAT exam scores; writing sample; interview upon request. *Three years of public school teaching experience or equivalent experience in other settings (e.g., private school teaching; training in the private sector; leadership training in the military). Priority will be given to practicing principals and assistant/associate principals whose career goal is to be a superintendent and those with evidence of leadership activity in schools and/or related settings. **At least one letter should be from a site-based school administrator or superintendent with whom the applicant has worked. Minimum Criteria for Unconditional Admission: Cumulative graduate GPA of 3.5, GREV = 450, GREQ = 450. MAT score at 50th percentile or above may be substituted for the GRE.
