Teaching FellowsProfessor participates in training for Chernobyl survivors

Dr. Daniel Leitch from Appalachian State University’s Reich College of Education participated in a community development training seminar in October held in the Ukraine. The seminar was part of on-going efforts to provide psychosocial rehabilitation to residents of areas affected by the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.

The ASU Teaching Fellows program, housed in the RCOE, has released it's new website for both current and upcoming studens. You can check out the site at http://www.teachingfellows.appstate.edu. The program is designed to encourage students to become teachers in the North Carolina school system.

Dr. McClannon's Dissertation was entitled Improving Student Engagement with Universal Design for Learning: A Comparison of Technology and Non-Technology Based Interventions.

The White House has adopted the work of Gloria Houston, noted children's author, graduate of ASU, and recipient of the RCOE's Rhodendron Award, as its theme for the holidays at the White House this year.

The book, THE YEAR OF THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS TREE, is a highly popular one and Gloria was invited to the White House to read excerpts. Mitchell County, Gloria's home county in North Carolina, has also adopted the book and has developed a complete economic package around it, complete with products and tourist events that carry out the theme of the book.

 

Susannah LawrenceHPC Graduate Student Wins Statewide Award

The North Carolina College Personnel Association awarded the Graduate Student of the Year to Appalachian State University college student development major (HPC Department) Susannah J. Lawrence on Nov. 9.
'I was pretty excited and surprised,' Lawrence said.

Appalachian’s Director of Housing and Residence Life Dr. Jeff Doyle, area coordinator Sarah A. Chapman and former area coordinator Mario Rapetti nominated Lawrence for the award.

The Teachers of the Year and their principals from the eight county school districts in the ASU Public School Partnership were honored on Saturday, October 14th during half time ceremonies at the ASU football celebrating Education Day. The recipients were introduced and awarded with certificates by Dr. Charles Duke, Dean of the RCOE and Mrs. Diana Beasley, North Carolina Teacher of the Year.

Zach and Linda TateAnne Cannon Scholarship Founders Honored

At the recent ASU Foundation Luncheon, Zach and Linda Tate were recognized for their contribution of $100,000 over four years to provide scholarship support to students from underrepresented groups who are preparing to be teachers. Known as the Anne Cannon Scholars, 20 students received scholarships this year. The scholarships are named after Mr. Tate's mother. He is a graduate of ASU and he and his wife Linda reside in Blowing Rock.

Diana Beasley, a biology teacher from Hickory High School and the state’s 2006-2007 Teacher of the Year, visited Appalachian on Friday, October 13th and spoke with the Appalachian Teaching Fellows.

 

"Swing for Scholarships" Golf Tournament raises $20,000

The Reich College of Education’s Inaugural "Swing for Scholarships" Golf Benefit was held on October 10, 2006 at Rock Barn Golf & Spa. Over 84 golfers participated and included alumni, friends, faculty, students and staff of the College of Education. The event raised $20,000 with net proceeds to support scholarships and programmatic support for teacher education majors.

Proposed Master’s Degree in Elementary Education at CCC&TI Campus

Appalachian State University is proposing to offer a master of arts degree in elementary education in Caldwell County beginning spring 2007.

A meeting to discuss this program will be held Thursday, Sept. 28, at 5 p.m. in room 322 Faye A. Broyhill Building at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute. CCCTI is located at 2855 Hickory Blvd. (Hwy 321) in Hudson.

Appalachian faculty and administrative staff members will discuss how an individual who has earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and holds an “A” NC teaching license or equivalent from another state may enter this program.

Courses in Appalachian’s off-campus programs are typically taught two nights per week (an average of six semester hours per term), and the off-campus graduate tuition/fees rate for the current year is $140.25 per credit hour for an in-state student.  Space is limited. If interested, it is important to attend the meeting.

JoAnne Goetz, Billy Viger, and Dolly FarrellRhododendron Society Makes Special Trip

Billy Viger ’72, ’73, one of new three 2006 inductees into the Reich College of Education’s Rhododendron Society, was unable to attend this year’s award luncheon. Since he couldn’t come to the award, Appalachian made sure to get the award to him!

College of Education Director of Development DOLLY FARRELL ’06 and fellow Rhododendron Society inductee JoAnne Vannoy Goetz ’56 traveled to Atlanta recently to personally give Viger his award.

Viger has worked for 30 years teaching at the elementary, middle and high school level both in the public and private school systems in Georgia. During his career he was named Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year in 1981 and appeared on ABC TV’s World News Tonight in 1991 as an expert on teaching health education. In 2000, he received the Atlanta Braves/Bellsouth Excellence in Education Award.

While at Appalachian, he was a force on the Mountaineer soccer team. He was a four-year letter winner for the Mountaineers from 1968-71, serving as team captain and earning offensive MVP honors as a senior.

The Instructional Technology degree program serves hundreds of students each year, almost all of whom live and work more than 30 miles away.

The program coordinators have created AET Zone, a 3D, immersive, scalable world for learning that serves as the social, curricular, and pedagogical hub for all content and most interactions in the Instructional Technology program.

 

Dr. Alfred S. AlschulerIn Memoriam

Dr. Alfred S. Alschuler III, 66, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Thursday, Aug. 3. Dr. Alschuler was a devoted teacher and mentor at Harvard, University of Mass. Amherst, and Appalachian State. He served as president of John F. Kennedy University, president of the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, dean of the Reich College of Education at Appalachian State, and most recently as professor in the Department of Human Development and Psychological Counseling.

Tracy SmithSmith Family welcomes new member

Curriculum and Instruction professor, Dr. TRACY SMITH, is welcoming a new member to her family this year.

On June 20th at 11:06 pm, Ellary Grace Smith was born at Watauga Medical Center. The RCOE extends its good wishes to Tracy, her husband Tommy, and their new daughter as they celebrate this summer.

Area residents study children’s literature in Germany

Eight students in the master of library science degree program at Appalachian State University are in Munich, Germany, studying at the International Youth Library.

This is the second year that Appalachian has offered the study abroad course “International Youth Library Research,” which is hosted by the International Youth Library.

Participants are Sharon Jacob from Pinnacle Elementary School in Rutherford County, Jennifer Dellinger from West Lincoln Middle School, Kishia Moore from Deyton Elementary in Spruce Pine, Elizabeth Stringer and Nicole Boyette from Galax High School in Galax, Va., Jerrianne Queen from the Catawba County Public Library and Kimberly McFall Benfield from East Alexander Middle School.

Interim Assistant Dean for Field Experiences

The Dean is pleased to announce that Dr. ROMA ANGEL from the Department of Leadership and Educational Studies has agreed to serve as interim Assistant Dean for Field Experiences for the coming year. She will assume her duties as of July 1, 2006.

Dr. Angel brings a wealth of experience as a classroom teacher and administrator as well as her experience as a faculty member in the RCOE, including experience as program coordinator of the MSA program. Dr. Angel holds the following licensures: superintendent, principal, curriculum specialist, English, and Academically Gifted. She also has served as an elementary school principal, and an assistant principal at the high school level. In addition, Dr. Angel has traveled and presented internationally and most recently was co-director of a summer MSA experience in Puebla, Mexico. She also has been very active in promoting uses of technology to enhance teaching and learning and her publications have appeared in a number of national and international journals and proceedings.

I am very pleased that Dr. Angel has accepted this appointment, and I know we will look forward to working with her in the area of field experiences during the coming year.

Anne Cannon Foundation Contribution

We are very pleased to announce a $100,000 contribution to fund the Anne Cannon Scholarship Program over four years. This funding will provide scholarship aid to high school graduates and current ASU students from under-represented groups, including students of color and economically disadvantaged students.

Preference will be given to NC residents who demonstrate financial need and express an interest in pursuing teacher education at ASU. Students who participated in the Crosby Scholars Program will be given special consideration. Five scholarships will be awarded in each class: five entering freshmen who meet admissions criteria and have at least a 2.5 GPA; ten enrolled freshmen and sophomores and five juniors enrolled in teacher education.

Special thanks to DOLLY FARRELL , RCOE Advancement Officer, and Harry Williams, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Diversity for their efforts in securing this funding from the Anne Cannon Foundation.

Addictions concentration in Community Counseling (HPC)

The Addictions concentration in Community Counseling (HPC) has been selected as the Outstanding Program for 2006 by the American Counseling Association.

This national award will be presented at ACA's Convention next month in Montreal.

 

Thalia ColemanASU Black History Month: Thalia Coleman

The Appalachian celebrates Black History Month by profiling prominent African American figures on the ASU campus Dr. Thalia Coleman has struggled against difficult odds her entire life, but those did not keep her from becoming the first African American woman to gain tenure at Appalachian State University.

Coleman, the first person in her family to go to college, graduated from South Carolina State University with a bachelor’s in speech correction. She went on to earn a master’s degree of arts in speech pathology and audiology from Pennsylvania State and a doctorate in communication processes and disorders from the University of Florida.

Congratulations are due KAAREN HAYES (LRE), Director of the Parent2Parent Program. Kaaren recently received the Ann Royal Special Recognition for lifetime Achievement Award from the Leo M. Croghan Memorial Foundation for her work with Family Support of the High Country, an organization that provides services to parents and families of children with developmental disabilities.
