Boone trades books for Bolivian culture - Appalachian State University has a sister. She is modest, her one-story frame built on Bolivian soil from practical plaster and concrete, run by volunteers, proudly housing around 4,600 books. Her name is Biblioteca Th’uruchapitas. [More]
Appalachian receives $213,652 to host Egyptian educators - Appalachian State University has been selected to host two groups of Egyptian educators who will participate in a 15-day, short-term study tour to learn about comprehensive school reform models used in the United States. [More]
Establishment of the Janet W. Bloodgood Endowment - The Reich College of Education community expresses its sincere condolences to the family and friends of our beloved colleague, Dr. Janet Bloodgood, reading professor in Language, Reading and Exceptionalities. Oxford Fourth Grade Students Help Library in Bolivia - The fourth grade students at Oxford Elementary wanted to help others in some way, so their teachers found a perfect opportunity. Teachers Connie Abernathy and Rachel Lamb, both finishing their masters at ASU, heard about a library in Bolivia for children that needed a permanent home. [More]

Photos from 2007 Golf Tournament - One hundred and thirty six golfers played the Jones Course at Rock Barn Golf & Spa under very sunny skies. The tournament raised over $30,000 and net proceeds will support scholarships for undergraduate teacher education majors. [More]
ASU Foundation grants support faculty research and teaching - More than $85,000 in grants has been awarded to faculty at Appalachian State University through a program called Appalachian Foundation Fellows Grants. RCOE recipients include Alecia Jackson, Jon Winek, and Linda Veltze. [More]
ASU and Watauga County schools host Jordanian educator - Appalachian is one of 10 institutions across the United States selected to host Jordanian administrators. Linda McCalister, director of the Public School Partnership in the Reich College of Education, will serve as the primary host for the program. [More]

RCOE professor participates in US-China forum on at-risk youth - China is experiencing a rise in youth violence, related in part to the country’s growing economy, according to Daniel Leitch. Leitch recently participated in a US-China forum on at-risk youth held in Beijing. [More]
Joy Osborne Receives 2007 ASU Staff Award - Osborne is the administrative assistant for the NC Teaching Fellows Program in the Reich College of Education. Osborne was praised for her competence, efficiency and conscientiousness that she brings to the job. [More]
College of Education Professors Receive BOG Awards - Melanie Greene was one of 16 professors from UNC System universities receiving the 2007 UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching. Charlene Sox received the Board of Governors Appalachian State University School/College Awards. [More]

Two Appalachian faculty members receive Fulbright awards - Laurie Williamson, coordinator of the professional school counseling program in the Reich College of Education has received a Fulbright Scholar Award to conduct research and teach at the University of Balamand in Lebanon for 10 months, beginning later this summer. Educators from the Andes visit Appalachian - Educators from public and private schools in Cochabamba, Bolivia, will visit ASU June 12-19 to discuss a partnership that is expanding educational opportunities for children through the support of the only children’s library in Bolivia. [More]

In need of middle grades teachers - There is a great need for middle school teachers in Caldwell County, and ASU is prepared to address that need. ASU is responding to this need by providing a part-time evening Bachelor of Science Middle Grade Education degree completion program. [More]

Greene receives UNC Board of Governors’ Excellence in Teaching Award - Melanie Greene says her work teaching future teachers has given her the awesome responsibility of touching the future in lasting and profound ways. She accomplishes that task by using what she calls the three R’s: rigor, relevance and relationships. [More]

Winston-Salem couple’s gift will aid children with speech, hearing and learning disabilities - The Communication Disorders Clinic at Appalachian State University has been named for Winston-Salem residents Charles E. and Geneva S. Scott. The couple has made a gift of real estate valued at $307,000 to the North Carolina Scottish Rite Masonic Foundation to support the activities of the clinic at Appalachian.

RCOE Develops Collaborative Project with Qatar University - Professors JULIE HORTON (Department of Curriculum and Instruction), DAVE KOPPENHAVER and GARY MOORMAN (Department of Language, Reading and Exceptionalities) have secured funding for a project that will provide faculty development for Qatar University in Doha, Qatar. The project was negotiated through the Deans of the Colleges of Education of the two universities: Dr. Hissa Mohd Sadiq at QU, and Dr. Charlie Duke at ASU.
