Mountaineer Summer Reading Program 2011
The Mountaineer Summer Reading Program is a collaborative effort between Appalachian Athletics and the Reich College of Education. Since its beginning in 2007, the program has continued to grow stronger each year, supporting and encouraging literacy among students in first through eighth grades in the eight county ASU Public School Partnership.
Mountaineer Readers 2011 has already begun, with commitments for participation from seventy-five schools in the Partnership. Students in Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Burke, Caldwell, Watauga, and Wilkes counties, grades one through eight will be afforded the opportunity to read grade level books during the summer of 2011 and to submit their reading log to the media center coordinator during the first week of school in the fall. Top readers in grades one through three, grades four through six, and grades seven through eight will earn a trip to an ASU football game, a tailgate party, and recognition on the fifty yard line during halftime of Education Day.
All students participating in the program will receive a gift; students completing the program will earn a poster. Additionally, the top three readers in each grade in each school will receive a voucher for a 2011-2012 Appalachian basketball game.
In addition to individual student recognition, the school in each county with the highest percentage of participating readers will earn a $300 award to their media center.
The foundation for successful student achievement begins with reading early and reading often. The Mountaineer Summer Reading Program is proud to be part of that foundation. For more information on Mountaineer Readers 2011 contact Kathy Howell at howellkh@appstate.edu.
